Do I need a permit to study in Canada?

If your studies last 6 months or less, you need:
a) A valid Passport
b) A Temporary Resident Visa (for citizens of certain countries):

If your studies last longer than 6 months, you need:
a) A valid passport
b) A study permit. In most cases, you must apply for the study permit before coming to Canada and provide with the following documents:
(1) proof of letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution in Canada whose the DLI# will be requested in your visa application form. All primary and secondary schools in Canada are automatically designated
(2) proof of financial support (to pay tuition & living expenses; transportation costs)
(3) proof of medical examination
(4) proof of no criminal record

c) A Temporary Resident Visa (for citizens of certain countries)
- Québec:
To be authorized to study in Québec: after receiving your letter of admission from the dignated learning institution, you need to obtain
(1) an Acceptance Certificate of Quebec (issued by the Government of Québec)
(2) a study permit (issued by the Government of Canada).
Please note that a study permit is not issued while the student is in Canada. Foreign student must submit an application to the Canadian Embassy or Canadian Consulate outside of Canada. When the application is approuved, the visa office will deliver the letter of introduction (also called introductory letter or Port of Entry Introduction Letter). The student will need to show this letter to officials at the port of entry when he/she arrives in Canada to get the study permit.
